Garden column

Fire Chief Tammy Webb works in her newly-expanded garden with raised beds.

I visited neighbor Tammy Webb last week and was impressed by her early gardening efforts. The mini greenhouse, next to the garden was filled with seedlings and transplants, ready to go when temperatures warm. A large raised water tank, filled with well water, was nearby and available when needed. She had expanded the garden area and added several raised beds. One already contained bean transplants, which she was prepared to cover if frost should be predicted.

She had been tilling native soil along a fence line for marigolds when I arrived. She admitted it was tough work, but said gardening was therapeutic and helped her to approach her job as fire chief more calmly.
