Jackets drop heart-breaker to Newport

By Tim Clark

It was a great night for football this past Friday as the Clinton Yellow Jjackets took on Newport in their fifth conference game. The air was cool but the action was red hot.

Seniors Robby Slack and Mason Speer dug in and played their hearts out on both sides of the ball. Speer had 127 yards rushing while Slack gained 40 yards on two receptions.

Harrison Lester left it all on the field with 6 carries for 30 yards and 2 touchdowns. Wyatt Fletcher carried the ball on six occasions for a total of 22 yards. Quarterback Fielder Dufrene rushed for 12 yards and was 6 for 17 in the air for 101 yards.

The defense spent a lot of time on the field trying to stop the running game of Newport.

Middle linebacker Lester did all he could with a remarkable 11 tackles for the night. Stephen Sappington and Caden Hickman also had a great game with 7 tackles each and Sappington with 2 QB sacks. There were several Jackets with 6 tackles each and they were Speer, Slack, Rex Fletcher, and Alex Clark. Colton Martin and Hunter Blanton ended the game with 4 tackles each.

In the end the Jackets had a hard time containing Newport’s outside running game and covering their receivers. The Jackets drop this heartbreaker 27-21, which brings their conference record to 2-3 with an overall record of 3-5.

This sets up a do-or-die situation in a roadtrip showdown with Heber Springs this Friday night. The winner goes to the playoffs and the loser goes to the house. Beating Heber is great and getting a playoff spot it great but doing both in the same night is awesome! Don’t miss it; kickoff is 7 p.m. at Heber Springs. See you there.
