The Clinton Junior Lady Jackets recently ended their 2012-13 season as District Champions.
Despite the cancellation of several games throughout the season due to the whooping cough outbreak and inclement weather, the girls took a record of 10 wins and 2 losses into the tournament. The well-traveled team, who had only one home game this season, opened the first round of tournament play with a 41-18 win against Stuttgart. The semi-final match-up against Heber Springs was a hard-fought battle with the girls claiming the victory, 28-23. This win slated the girls into the championship game with South Side Batesville. The Junior Jackets were seeking revenge over the Southerners for an earlier season loss, and for the 9th-grade girls (Kaytlyn Grimes, Haley Hink, Tori Johnson and Zoe Tester), revenge for two of three team losses last season.
With a large crowd of Yellow Jacket supporters making the trip to Lonoke, the girls’ performance made the fans’ trip a worthwhile experience. With balanced scoring from Johnson, Grimes and Allie Hensley (14, 11 and 9 points, respectively), tough defense, rebounding, forcing of turnovers, and hitting free-throws down the stretch, the girls came out on top 34-28. The girls ended the season as District Champions and Conference Runners-Up with a final record of 13-2. The team is coached by Ricky Cooper and Cole Gardner.
