The Van Buren County sheriff’s office tower was erected this week. An earlier communications tower was destroyed in a tornado last year and construction began earlier this year on land donated by Jimmy McIntire. Money for the 190-foot state of the art tower was obtained through insurance, grants, and private donations. The tower is just north of Clinton at 634 Eagle View Lane.

An accident last week on Highway 65 in Clinton claimed the life of a Bee Branch man and left two people injured. According to a report by Arkansas State Police Trooper Andrew T. May, Jimmy D. Newell, 72, was killed when was making a left-hand turn from Simmons bank to Highway 65 South in his 2006 Ford F-150 and was struck by a 2002 Peterbilt heading north. The truck was driven by Michael Jay Gilley, 54, of Yellville and he was taken to Ozark Health Medical Center for treatment of his injuries, the report said. Also injured was 10-year-old Katilyn Newell who was a passenger in her grandfather’s pickup. She was taken to Arkansas Children’s Hospital. Jimmy Newell was pronounced dead at the scene by Van Buren County Coroner Joe Tsosie. The accident occurred about 11:30 a.m. June 25.
