It was a banner year on Banner Mountain for watermelons. Jim Kirk, with help from his grandson Corey Graham, grew a North Carolina Giant that weighed 73.8 pounds, and another that weighed 65 pounds. Since Kirk’s 2000 retirement from Petit Jean Electric, his favorite pastimes are golfing and gardening.

These dogs are among 17 at Van Buren Animal Control that are out of time. If you have room in your heart and your home, you can save a life. Time is of the essence for these dogs whose only crime is that nobody wants them. They go by the names (from top left) Butch, Buddy, Jane, Jasper, Max, Jack, James, Bones and Jessie. Contact animal control at 745-2121 for more information. The cost to rescue a dog or cat is $25 for county residents, and some of those animals already have had the fee paid by a sponsor.
