The National Weather Service is warning that a significant ice storm is possible in northern Arkansas — including Van Buren County — late Wednesday through Thursday afternoon.
“Artic high pressure will provide colder air Wednesday and Thursday,” the Weather Service stated in issuing its winter storm watch for much of the northern half of the state. “At the same time, a storm system will approach from the plains and will drive moisture northward into the colder air.
“This will result in widespread wintry precipitation, especially over northern Arkansas. Warming aloft will prevent much snow from occurring, but subfreezing temperatures near the ground will lead to icing.”
The Weather Service warned that ice accruals of a quarter to half an inch or more are possible in some areas. Roads may become treacherous, especially bridges and overpasses, and widespread power outages are possible.
