Statewide meeting set on water issues

The Arkansas Natural Resources Commission (ANRC) has scheduled a Water Plan Update Workgroup Meeting for April 29 in North Little Rock. It will be at the Wyndham Riverfront Hotel, 2 Riverfront Dr., from 1 p.m. to 4:30. The meeting is open to the public.

“The purpose of the April 29th meeting is to prioritize the recommendations that were generated during the five regional March Water Plan meetings,” according to Edward Swaim, ANRC’s Water Resources Division manager. “Those recommendations were developed to resolve statewide and regional priority water issues.”

A previous statewide Water Plan Update meeting was held in January at Lonoke, and there were more than 175 attendees. “In January, participants began developing water-related issues that needed to be addressed in the Arkansas Water Plan Update,” Swaim explained.

“In February, meetings were held in each of the five Water Plan regions throughout the state to prioritize regional issues, and in March five more regional meetings were held to develop recommendations to resolve water-related issues in those areas and statewide. More than 700 attendees participated in these 11 meetings. Hundreds more have attended other meetings during the past 2 years of Water Plan work and have contributed priceless information and insight,” Swaim stated.

The recommendations from the March meetings have been summarized, along with the issues they address, and are posted on the Water Plan Update website, www.arwaterplan.arkansas.gov.

Swaim explained that a draft Arkansas Water Plan Update Executive Summary will be completed in early summer and will be available for public review and comment. The Update will be completed in November. For more information, call ANRC at (501) 682-1611, or visit the website.
