More than 37 years after his death, a Marine will be laid to rest near Center Ridge.
It was during the Vietnam conflict in 1975 when James R. Maxwell, an 18-year-old Marine Corps private first class, was riding in a helicopter that was shot down off the coast of Cambodia on May 15.
It took decades of extensive military effort to locate the remains of those lost in the “Mayaguez Incident,” and remains were located at various times over the past few months.
Maxwell was born Feb. 20, 1957, in Memphis, a son of William and Ula Mae Louise Maxwell.
He is now survived by brothers Paul and Gary Maxwell and sisters Patricia Cates and Janie Estes, all of Center Ridge.
Funeral services with full military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, at Mountain View Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be at Woolverton Mountain Cemetery.
