In the summer of 2013 there was only one summer meals site in Van Buren County where children from low-income families could get a nutritious meal when school was out.
For those children who rely on school lunch, summer can be an especially stressful time. The Arkansas No Kid Hungry campaign is currently recruiting sponsors and sites to participate in the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). The program helps ensure that children from low-income families continue receiving nutritious meals when school is not in session. Meals that meet federal nutrition guidelines are provided free to all children 18 years of age and younger at approved SFSP sites.
Organizations that participate in SFSP as a sponsor will receive weekly reimbursements for the dollars they spend on food to feed children during the summer.
Organizations that would like to offer their facilities to sponsors to feed children are also encouraged to participate as “sites,” though they will not be eligible for meal reimbursements.
