Sales tax

Clinton received $80,408 in revenue from its 1 percent sales tax, collected in November and reported in December.

Shirley received $2,732 from its 1 percent tax, Damascus received $11,547 and Fairfield Bay got $30,320 from its 1.5 percent sales tax.

Van Buren County has two 1 percent sales taxes, one for general revenue and one dedicated to construction bonds for the hospital.

The general revenue tax is divided among the county and its four incorporated towns based on population. Those figures for the same period are: Van Buren County, $285,130 (includes both taxes); Clinton, $25,328; Damascus, $2,434; Fairfield Bay, $20,977; and Shirley, $2,833.

To make up for the days lost to snow and ice earlier this month, the Shirley School District has announced that classes will resume on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014. School also will be held Jan. 3, Feb. 14 and Feb. 17.


The Clinton Chamber of Commerce says First Service Bank on Highway 65 has won its 2013 Holiday Decorating contest. Second place goes to the City Hall offices on Main Street and Cannaday Abstract and Title Co. in downtown Clinton took third place.


The Driver License testing - both written and road - slated for Friday, Jan. 3, at Clinton has been canceled. Testing will return to Clinton on Friday, Jan. 17, at regular times and place. Call 479-745-3096 for more information.
