Open house

Van Buren County 911 is holding an open house and fundraising event from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, at the Fairfield Bay Department of Public Safety, 101 Little Rock Drive. The event includes a dunking booth, free hamburgers and hot dogs and guided tours to show the public how the center operates. The center is seeking donations to upgrade radio consoles to work with the new countywide radio system. For more information call 884-6005.

On the agenda

The Clinton City Council will hold its regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, at the Clinton Municipal Airport meeting room. On the agenda under new business, according to City Hall, is a resolution on a tax-back program for Global Foods; the Clinton Chamber of Commerce; and a petition to repeal the new sign ordinance by Clinton businesswoman Kitty Murdock. The sign ordinance was unanimously approved at last month’s meeting. The meeting is open to the public.

Appointed

District Judge David Reynolds of Conway has been re-appointed by Gov. Mike Beebe to serve on the Arkansas Child Abuse, Rape and Domestic Violence Commission. Other re-appointments to the commission were: Lisa Channell, Little Rock; Dorinda Edminsten, Clarksville; Gracie Giles-Gonner, Helena-West Helena; Dr. Merlin Leach, Alpena; Stacey McKeown, Monticello; Kristin Pawlik, Rogers; and Patricia Scott, D.N.P., Little Rock. The terms expire July 1, 2015.

Hog farms

A coalition of conservation and citizen groups filed suit Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas, Western Division, challenging the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency and the U.S. Small Business Administration for their authorization of loan guarantee assistance to C&H Hog Farms, a 6,500-pig factory farm located on a major tributary of the Buffalo National River.
