The fourth annual Sale Barn Christmas Dinner is set. Alice Lovell and others will begin serving dinner at 11 a.m. Christmas Day. Anyone who would like to eat is welcome.
The Clinton City Council quickly finished its regular business to take up the 2014 city budget at its meeting last week. The council spent more than two hours discussing department budgets. It met again Tuesday evening to continue the process. Expected to be included in next year’s budget will be money for a vehicle for the zoning department.
Van Buren County was among 22 counties Gov. Mike Beebe declared to be disaster areas last Friday because of damage caused by severe winter storms.
The governor’s office said state Department of Emergency Management officials were on the ground with representatives of the Federal Emergency Management Agency in about a dozen of the affected counties to determine whether the state will qualify for federal assistance to help counties recover and repair damaged infrastructure.
In observance of Christmas, the Democrat will be closed on Dec. 25. Deadlines for classified or display advertising will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19. Deadlines for Community, Society and School & Youth items will be noon Friday, Dec. 20.
Attorney General Dustin McDaniel has filed a lawsuit against an Arizona organization accused of misleading Arkansans into believing their donations would benefit the children of American veterans. McDaniel’s lawsuit alleges that the Children of Veterans Foundation diverts the clothing items donated by Arkansas consumers to a for-profit company operated by one of the two directors of the nonprofit foundation. Though consumers are encouraged to “give back to those who protect our freedom,” the lawsuit states that the donations are used solely for the personal benefit and financial gain of the defendants.
