It met again Tuesday evening to continue the process. Expected to be included in next year’s budget will be money for a vehicle for the zoning department.

Disaster

Van Buren County was among 22 counties Gov. Mike Beebe declared to be disaster areas last Friday because of damage caused by severe winter storms.

The governor’s office said state Department of Emergency Management officials were on the ground with representatives of the Federal Emergency Management Agency in about a dozen of the affected counties to determine whether the state will qualify for federal assistance to help counties recover and repair damaged infrastructure.

Lawsuit

Attorney General Dustin McDaniel has filed a lawsuit against an Arizona organization accused of misleading Arkansans into believing their donations would benefit the children of American veterans. McDaniel’s lawsuit alleges that the Children of Veterans Foundation diverts the clothing items donated by Arkansas consumers to a for-profit company operated by one of the two directors of the nonprofit foundation. Though consumers are encouraged to “give back to those who protect our freedom,” the lawsuit states that the donations are used solely for the personal benefit and financial gain of the defendants.
