What’s Going On

Clinton School Board President Kyle Hensley has drawn an opponent in the Sept. 17, 2013, Annual School Election. Jamie Beavers has filed papers to oppose Hensley for the Zone 4 position on the School Board. Darla McJunkins is unopposed in her re-election bid in Zone 2. Both Hensley and Beavers are local dentists.

A public meeting will be held at the Van Buren County Election Commission office at the Courthouse Annex on Highway 65 in Clinton at 10 a.m. July 12 to draw names for ballot position.

There were no challengers for school board positions at Shirley or South Side-Bee Branch.

Overnight Monday some mailboxes were vandalized and mail stolen from them in neighborhoods near Clinton. The affected mailboxes appear to be on Highway 95 East and West and in the Barrens Community. Mail was found on the road in the Barrens Community and a resident on Highway 95 East said his mailbox was battered. Destroying, damaging or interfering with mail is considered tampering and is a crime. Anyone with information on the recent incidents should call the sheriff’s office at 745-2112.

State Sen. Bryan King, R-Green Forest, called on Gov. Mike Beebe on Tuesday to call a special session to repeal legislation passed this year to subsidize private health insurance for low-income Arkansans with federal Medicaid money.

Beebe said later, “Of course, I’m not going to call a special session to undo the hard-earned, bipartisan accomplishments of this General Assembly.”
