Van Buren County has been approved for the Emergency Conservation Program to help producers clean up pastures and repair or build fences that were damaged during the April 10 tornado. For information on the program contact the Farm Services Agency at (870) 448-3184 Ext. 2.

Helping youth

After a Ways and Means Human Resources Subcommittee hearing on improving the lives of foster children last week in Washington, U.S. Rep. Tim Griffin said the issue is one he cares deeply about. “My wife and I recently learned about the work being done by The CALL – Children of Arkansas Loved for a Lifetime – a foster care initiative that has created an unprecedented partnership between government and local churches.” The hearing reviewed policies and practices that limit opportunities for foster youth, as well as recent efforts to enable foster parents and foster youth to expand the youth’s participation in everyday events and activities. In observance of Memorial Day, the office of the Van Buren County Democrat will be closed Monday, May 27. Deadlines for the May 29 edition of the newspaper will be one day early. Classified and display advertising deadlines are 4 p.m. Thursday, May 23. Deadline for local news and community items will be noon Friday, May 24.


The Better Business Bureau is urging all consumers and businesses to pay close attention to a Cyber Security Advisory issued by the Federal Bureau of Investigation regarding a vulnerability in Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 8 browser that could allow scammers to access and take over users’ computers. The risk for all users – home, business and government – is high, and Microsoft has released a workaround that acts as a temporary fix. It is available at:
