Saturday, May 11, is the U.S. Postal Service and National Association of Letter Carriers annual food drive. The Stamp Out Hunger food drive is a nationwide effort that provides food to local food banks and pantries. With more than 50 million Americans living at risk of hunger, food banks across the country continue to experience record demand for emergency assistance. Local letter carriers will collect non-perishable food donations left at mailboxes Saturday and deliver them to food pantries. Stamp Out Hunger is in its 21st year. On Saturday, April 27, 122 participating Arkansas law enforcement agencies, including those in Van Buren County, collected more than 9 tons of unwanted and expired medications as part of the sixth U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration National Prescription Take Back Initiative. The 18,764 lbs. of medications were the most ever collected in a single Arkansas Take Back event. According to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory, the estimated number of pills collected is 26.1 million. Through six statewide take back events, Arkansas has collected over 33 tons of unneeded medications.
