Meeting

The next meeting of the Van Buren County Quorum Court will be 7 p.m. Jan. 3, because of the state’s requirement for an annual organizational meeting. This will be the only scheduled meeting of the Quorum Court. The meeting place is the Quorum Court Room at the Courthouse Annex on Highway 65.

Goodbyes

Dec. 20 was the last meeting for four justices of the peace: Ken Lemings, David McBee, Shannon Deckard and John Harmon. County Judge Roger Hooper praised the four for their work on the court and presented them with plaques. Harmon, who served from 2003-12, said he was honored to have served. McBee, who was appointed earlier this year to replace JP George Bruen who resigned for health reasons, said: “Thanks for putting up with me. … You do a wonderful job.”

Jobless

Arkansas recorded its lowest unemployment rate of the year in November, according to labor statistics released Friday.

The state’s unemployment rate for November was 7 percent, down from 7.2 percent in October and nine-tenths of a percentage point lower than the November 2011 rate of 7.9 percent, the state Department of Workforce Services reported.

“Arkansas’ unemployment rate has trended downward so far this year, ranging from a high of 7.6 percent in January and February to a low of 7 percent in November,” said DWS spokeswoman Kimberly Friedman.

The U.S. unemployment rate last month was 7.7 percent, down from 7.9 percent in October and 8.7 percent in November 2011.

DWS reported that 1.3 million Arkansans were employed in November and 95,900 were unemployed.
