Three seek mayor’s job in Clinton

There are several opposed races in this year’s municipal election in Clinton.

Seeking the position of Clinton mayor are businessman Jeff Pistole, School Board member Richard McCormac and City Councilwoman Wendy Russ. Current mayor, Roger Rorie, did not seeking re-election.

Two incumbents drew opponents in the City Council races. Kip Stringer is challenging Councilwoman Gayla Bradley for the Ward 1 Position 1 seat, and Richard “Dickie” Hink will oppose Councilwoman Nina Bonds Baker for the Ward 1 Position 2 seat. Stringer and Hink have both previously been councilmen.

Bobby R. Bradford and Timothy Barnes have filed for the Ward 2 Position 1 seat that is being vacated by Russ.

Councilmen Sammy J. Ward, Ward 2 Position 2, Johnny Moore, Ward 3 Position 1, and Jason D. Lynch, Ward 3 Position 2, are running unopposed.

In the city of Shirley, Mayor Johnny Sowell did not draw an opponent. Recorder/Treasurer Melissa Worthing will face challenger Karen L. Bradley. Ward 1 Position 3 incumbent Brandy Kimmons is opposed by Kevin Johnson. In Ward 1 Position 4, incumbent Paul Compton will face Carl Trahan-True. Lisa Hackett, Ward 1 Position 1, and Floyd L. Haley, Ward 1 Position 5, and Brad Brown, Ward 1 Position 2, did not draw opponents.

City of Fairfield Bay Mayor Paul Wellenberger is running unopposed in the November election. The three alderman positions up for election each drew only one candidate: Sharon Luxon, Ward 1 Position 1; Robert Otis, Ward 2 Position 1; and Larry Castro, Ward 3 Position 1.

In Damascus, no one will be facing a challenger. The candidates who filed by last Friday’s deadline are: Leon Pavatt, mayor; Clariece W. Brown, recorder/treasurer; Gilbert Lewis, Ward 1 Position 1; Kevin Moore, Ward 1 Position 2; Jackie Williams, Ward 1 Position 3; Gene Byrd, Ward 1 Position 4; and Jerry Hensley, Ware 1 Position 5.

Municipal races are bi-partisan.
