Van Buren County Sheriff Scott Bradley warns county residents not to fall for phone scams.
The latest scam to be making the rounds is one in which a caller, hoping to gain information about the bank account of their potential victims, tells the victim that they will be receiving a check and they should deposit it. Another spin on the scam is for a potential victim to receive a check in the mail from someone they don’t know with information about depositing the check.
A resident of Scotland received such a check and notified the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff’s office said the goal is to get bank account numbers.
If it’s too good to be true, it probably is, Bradley says. He warns folks not to cash checks received through the mail from someone they don’t know.
