Ordinance brings new library closer to reality

At its meeting last week, the Van Buren County Quorum Court approved an ordinance that moves forward the building of a new library.

Justices of the peace approved an ordinance to designate White River Planning and Development District as a public corporation for the sole purpose of financing the building of a new 11,000 square foot library building. The county would lease the building to the district.

Library board President Rhonda Davis said work should begin within six months. Don and Jo Nell Warren have donated land near their Wellness Center to build a library. The facility will be built through the library maintenance millage.

The Quorum Court also approved an ordinance to put on the ballot in May an issue to allow several fire departments to assess and levy volunteer fire dues on each residence and business having an occupiable structure. The departments asking to be added are Alread, Botkinburg, Culpepper, Damascus, Dennard, Highway 110, Morganton, Scotland and Shirley. The dues are voluntary and do not have to be paid.
