City appoints ‘liaison’ to shelter

Clinton appoints shelter ‘liaison’

The Clinton mayor appointed a volunteer “liaison” Monday to represent the city’s interest at the Van Buren County Animal Shelter.

Mayor Roger Rorie appointed Marcie Mezo, a former employee of the shelter, to the position at a special meeting. Mezo currently is a volunteer at the Fairfield Bay Animal Shelter and has more than 20 years experience working at shelters and with animals, she said.

Councilwomen Wendy Russ and Gayla Bradley expressed dissatisfaction with the current situation. They said the city gives money for the shelter but has no say in the operations. Clinton contributes $20,000 to the shelter’s annual budget, which is more than $75,000.

The duties of the volunteer liaison include, according to the resolution, giving the council “regular and reliable updates as to the status of the running and maintaining of the facility.”

Mezo is not authorized to pick up animals.

The council members stated again Monday that they receive many complaints about animal control in the city. They were unanimous in their decision to approve the resolution creating the unpaid position. Johnny Moore was not present at the special meeting.
