Van Buren County Democrat
The Van Buren County Democrat is the dominant source of local news for the more than 17,000 residents of Van Buren County, Arkansas.
The Democrat began publication in Clinton in 1909 under editor and publisher J.B. Fraser. The newspaper became a casualty of The Great Depression and closed in 1933. Shortly thereafter it reopened and has been going strong for almost 80 years.
Long-time owner and publisher Jay Jackson sold the Democrat it to Westward Communications, which in turn, sold it to Donrey Media, now known as Stephens Media, in 2000.
Stephens Media, based in Las Vegas, Nevada, also publishes the Las Vegas Review-Journal and more than 40 other newspapers in nine states, including more than a dozen in Arkansas.
