Fifty years ago, May 8, 1964, was the graduation day for 15 Shirley High School students. Saturday, May 10, 2014, was the day set aside for celebrating their 50th class reunion.
The reunion was held at the Shirley Community Center with eight of the remaining 13 members attending. Those present were Lora Hensley Loge of Fayetteville, Donna Ward Norman of Little Rock, Arthur Henson of Little Rock, Sam Huggins of Clinton, Dee Berry, Jim Berry, LaDonna Eoff Bennett and Margaret Smith Earnhart, all of Shirley. Also attending was Jackie Williams Maxwell, first-grade teacher in 1952-53, who is now living in Little Rock. Miss Jackie’s first-grade class started with 33 students; over the next 12 years many moved away leaving the remaining 15 to graduate.
Spouses of the graduates who attended included Charles Norman, Dana Henson, Edna Huggins, Don Bennett and Ray Earnhart. Other guests included J.B. Myers of Las Vegas, Jim Bradley of Oklahoma, Bob Bradley of Searcy, Clifton Bolden and Thelma Murray, both of Shirley.
The other graduating members who were unable to attend were Martha Barnum Kopee of Maryland, Nancy Ham Selvidge of Illinois, Dennis Huggins of Missouri, Weldon Thomas of Dennard and James Little of Shirley. Johnny Clark and Donna Miller Kester are deceased.
May 10 was a milestone for the class. Many stories, laughs and renewing of old times were enjoyed by all.
