Members of the Shirley High Class of 1953 held a reunion June 7.

The Shirley High School Class of 1953 celebrated its 61st reunion June 7, 2014, at the lake home of Patsy Brown Farris and her husband, Dwaine.

The hosts prepared a great buffet and the classmates caught up on old and present news.

Some facts about the graduates:

~ They have ties to Elvis Presley — one of them served in Army boot camp with the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll; another moved to Memphis where he took care of Presley’s cars; and a third was lucky enough to see Elvis in concert when he first started performing.

~ One graduate met his wife by helping with her roller skates, and they have been skating through life together for 61 years.

~ One graduate managed to have two dates in one night. He took his first date to the Blue Bonnet Drive-In in Clinton, where he saw someone else he was very interested in. He took the first date home and met up with the other woman and took her out that same night. He later married the special second-date woman and they are still happily together.

~ One graduate surprised everyone by getting married two weeks before graduation. It didn’t work out, but then she met her Prince Charming.

These are the stories I’ve heard. True or false? You decide.

These classmates have passed on and are sadly missed: Winfred Newby, Floyd R. Terry and Lloyd Hensley. Winston Tucker lost his wife this past year. Jo Cullum Blevins died in 2013; she did such a great job of putting together the past reunions.
