The Van Buren County Literacy Council has been matching tutors and adult students for more than 20 years.
The council maintains an office and a classroom in the Career Center/Adult Education building at the Courthouse Annex complex in Clinton. Tutoring also takes place in several locations at Fairfield Bay. All training, books and materials are free to both the tutor and student.
The council is seeking more volunteer tutors able to give one to two hours a week to help some of the 2,000 Van Buren County residents who have difficulty reading a newspaper, a job application, or even reading to their children. Tutoring is done one-on-one to provide privacy. No teaching experience is necessary, just a willingness to help.
Many tutors say their experience is rewarding. Now is the time to decide to make a difference in someone’s life by teaching them to read. A free tutor training session will be held soon. Call at 253-1873 for further information.
