District fair cancels pageants

North Central Arkansas District Fair officials have made the decision to cancel all district fair beauty pageants and the youth talent contest this year. This cancellation is due to the cost involved in beauty pageants and the lack of participation in these events in the county and district fairs. The entry deadline for the district pageants and talent contest is five days after the contestant’s county fair. Four of the seven county fairs in the district had only entered six contestants and the other three fairs in the district indicated they would not be participating in the district pageant. The district pageants need at least 60 contestants to pay expenses.

Last year the NCA District Fair spent almost $2,000 on the pageants and talent contest and lost over $400 on revenue received from entry fees and gate admissions. Pageants are very expensive to produce. The district fair cannot take the chance of losing money again this year because they do not have the assets to cover the loss. Beauty pageant participation has declined for the past three or four years and this is a statewide trend. This will not affect the state pageants in anyway.

The Arkansas State Fair welcomes all the Little Mr.’s ages 0-5 and Miss’s ages 0-12 to enter the Arkansas State Fair Little Mr. & Miss Pageant. This is an open contest. However, only the first 30 contestants per age division will be able to compete. It is important that entry forms be submitted as soon as possible. Rules and the entry form are on the Arkansas State Fair website at www.arkansasstatefair.com.
