Piecemakers

Piecemakers’ monthly quilt club meeting was held on Wednesday, June 20, at the Van Buren County Fairgrounds. The meeting was well attended. Victoria Banks welcomed members and guests and Linda Korinek conducted the business meeting. Jan Savu gave an update on the next retreat, which is scheduled for the first week in October. Sign-up will open in July (for members only).

Susan Moore showed a sample of our challenge to Rescue this Ugly Little Star Quilt. It can be made with a straight setting or on point. Follow the directions and choose the colors you think will be pleasing. The challenge is to make the top and it is due at the July meeting. Maralou Spears presented a historical sketch about the origination of the Arkansas state flag; then gave the next four Civil War blocks: Stars & Stripes, Order Number Eleven with template, Peace, and Right Hand of Friendship.

Members participating in the Pizza Box Exchange expressed what a fun activity it has turned out to be. Debi Morton announced that the Extension Homemakers would be sponsoring a Quilt Show at the Van Buren County Fairgrounds in November. Quilters from Arkansas are invited to enter their quilts. Daphne Higginbotham from the Quilting Bee in Mountain View presented the program. Daphne demonstrated how to make Dimensional Bow Tie placemats from the pattern Served with a Twist. So many quilting projects were shown in the Sew and Tell part of the program — from baby quilts to runners to larger bed quilts; from a Minnie Mouse hair bow to coasters to ornaments; from pincushions to fabric baskets to bags. Rene Riggan taught our wool applique class for Sit and Sew. Kits were provided and it was so fun to learn the different hand embroidery stitches and see the beautiful results. Our next meeting will be held at the Methodist Church in Clinton at 10 a.m. July 18. Anyone interested in quilting is welcome to attend. Four women from the Prairie County Quilting Guild will be our special guests. They will be presenting a program on Underground Railroad Quilts. Our Sit and Sew project will be the Iron Caddy and Pad presented by Linda Forry.
