Crafting

The Sew and Sews will meet at the First Service Bank Community Room at 10 a.m. Friday, March 8. We will be making fish from soda bottles. If you would like to learn how to make this and many other craft items, join us. You will need to bring 2 straight sided large soda bottles, scissors and a stapler. If you do not have the items we are using, extras are usually available. There are no fees for supplies and no dues. We make craft items from donated materials and all proceeds go to the Angel Tree. We were excited to welcome three new crafters to our last meeting: Marty Boren, Jerry Padgett and Janice Meier who will be teaching our next craft class. Our quilt project, a queen-size sampler quilt, is coming along quite nicely and will be raffled this fall. For more information on the Sew and Sews, contact Deborah Jones at 253-3497.

Garden

The Feb. 27 meeting of the Iris Garden Club was held in the home of hostess Ida Holt with Susan Moore as co-hostess.

Nell Crouch led the creed followed by a business meeting conducted by Vonda Crocker substituting for President Rita Bintliff who was unable to attend.

Final plans are being made for the club’s 60-year celebration to be held March 24, 2013, in the community room of First Service Bank, Clinton. The public is welcome to share in the celebration, which begins at 2 p.m.

The program was provided by Raven Lawson, Watershed Education Coordinator in the Department of Environmental Quality. She presented a wonderful program on designing and constructing a water garden.

After the program, delicious desserts were provided by the hostesses.

4H

4H club members are encouraged to sign up for the Giant Watermelon and Pumpkin Contest. There is a $1.50 charge for pumpkin seeds and a $1.50 charge for watermelon seeds for each participant.

The top two county winners in each division will be eligible to enter the “State Weigh-In.” The weigh-in will be held on the first Saturday of the Arkansas State Fair (Oct. 12). Nearly $1,500 in prize money was awarded to the top pumpkin and watermelon winners last year. We hope to have a similar amount for this year. For more information visit www.arkansasstatefair.com. Deadline to order pumpkin and watermelon seeds is March 25, 2013. Orders should be turned in to the Van Buren County Extension Office.
