City lists priorities for parks grant

The city of Clinton will pursue grants for safety netting and additional bleachers at its softball fields at City Park, it was decided at a public meeting last week. Overlaying the walking trails at the park was also near the top of the list.

Debbie Webb of White River Planning and Development said those items would be considered “short-term” goals. She will help the city in its attempt to receive a grant for the projects. The grant is a 50/50 matching grant, which means that whatever its value the city must match it through money or “in kind,” which is work on the projects.

“Ask for the moon, and be happy if you get a few stars,” Webb told about a dozen gathered for the meeting.

Other items on the grant wish list were a splash pad, new and safer equipment and handicapped-accessible equipment for the Kiddie Park, new restrooms and a concession stand for the high school ball fields and more equipment for the natural playground.

Clinton Mayor Roger Rorie said he visited the Clinton Senior Center earlier and found that a swimming pool and indoors walking facility were at the top of their list.

Webb said obtaining grants for those projects would not be possible during this round of grants.
