The annual National Chuckwagon Races rode off into the sunset Sunday afternoon.
As always, the event drew thousands to Van Buren County. It began 28 years ago when Dan and Peggy Eoff invited a few friends over and they held some wagon races. Over the years that small gathering has become the largest chuckwagon racing event in the nation.
This year there was plenty to offer both on the Bar Of Ranch and around it with yard sales lining the highways and food, fellowship and horses everywhere.
As usual there was also a little controversy, this time with a last-minute change in who would serve ice cream to the riders, and at least one horse believed to be stolen, according to Facebook posts.
There was no official word on attendance by press time.
Here, according to the official website of the races, are some of the overall winners:
Oklahoma Land Rush Wagon: White River Cattle Co.
Oklahoma Land Rush Outrider: Kateland Allen
Mule Race: Bob Bingham
4 Up Mules: Sue’s Pawn Express
Snowy River Race: Drew Brown
This year’s musical performers were John Michael Montgomery, Jason Boland, Little Texas, and Riders in the Sky.
Now, it’s time to start planning for 2014.
